Blues win 4-0 at Tottenham
Pompey Ladies got their Premier League Southern Division campaign back on track with a convincing 4-0 victory at Tottenham.
The result ended a run of four league games without a win and saw them leapfrog their opponents into fifth spot.
Lucy Quinn fired the visitors ahead after just seven minutes, slotting home following a short corner routine.
And it was Quinn who then doubled the advantage with a low shot past Spurs stopper Bianca Baptiste.
The hosts had a chance to reduce the deficit when Wendy Martin was fouled in the box, but Jenna Schillaci’s spot-kick was saved by Courtney Trodd and Megan Wynne sent the loose ball against the post.
They were made to pay for their profligacy just before the break, as Ini Umotong collected a cross before smashing home Pompey’s third.
Umotong then added her second of the afternoon in the closing stages, beating Baptiste from close range to complete the scoring.
Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “It’s been coming because our performances have been at a really high level in recent weeks.
“We’ve been unlucky not to get the results to match how we’ve played, so it was great to collect all three points.
“It was a physically demanding game and we left the pitch with a few bumps and bruises, but the girls stuck to the game-plan well.
“Our resilience and composure were tested, but we passed that test and that’s what won us the match.
“We scored four goals, but we also have to praise Courtney for saving a penalty. It was at 2-0 at that point and we went on to score a third moments later, so it was a big moment in the game.
“I was delighted with the work-rate we showed to match our attacking prowess and we’re looking to maintain that when we’re next in action against West Ham in a fortnight.”
