POMPEY PALS' ALE

28 July 2014

Special beer to go on sale

Pompey have teamed up with the Cerne Abbas Brewery to produce a limited edition Pale Ale to be sold in bars and lounges at the club this season to commemorate those from Portsmouth who served in the First World War.

A proportion of each bottle sold will be donated to the Pompey Pals project, a registered charity dedicated to promoting awareness of the role men from the city played in the Great War, notably the ‘Pals’ battalion formed in the city.

The beer will go on sale from the Charlton friendly on Saturday, August 2, initially in the Victory Lounge and Montgomery Lounge, and it is hoped to roll out the product further if there is demand.

Fifty pence from every bottle sold will be donated to the Pompey Pals’ charity and the link-up came about because one of the brewers, Chris Pennycook, is a life-long Blues fan.

He said: “The Pompey Pals’ Ale is a hand crafted real ale brewed by Vic at the Cerne Abbas Brewery.

“We decided to brew a light coloured ale that may entice lager drinkers. It’s something a little fruity, but not too hoppy and above all easy to drink.

“Cerne Abbas Brewery are honoured to have been chosen to brew this special ale for such a worthy cause.

“While we all get behind those chosen 11 upon the sacred turf of Fratton Park and their relentless pursuit of promotion this season, we should all take a moment to reflect on those who paid the  ultimate price for King and country 100 years ago and raise a glass to the  Pompey Pals.”

Vic Irvine and Jodie Moore set up the brewery in June of this year and they are also delighted to be involved.

Pompey’s catering and banqueting manager Mark McComiskey added: “We are delighted to be supporting the Pompey Pals’ charity this season and this is a fantastic way all our beer-drinking fans can get involved in supporting a worthy cause.”

On August 4, the Pompey Pals’ project will be unveiling a memorial outside Fratton Park, honouring those who fell.
