MATCH PREVIEW: POMPEY v NORTHAMPTON

6 May 2016

All you need to know about League Two clash

Pompey bring the curtain down on the regular season by hosting the League Two champions this weekend.

But while Northampton can bask in their achievements, the Blues know that there is still plenty of work to be done.

Paul Cook’s side are already guaranteed to be facing Plymouth over two legs in the play-offs next week.

But if they remain in their current position of fifth then they will be at Fratton Park for the second fixture.

To do that they simply have to match Argyle’s result – with the Devon outfit hosting Hartlepool.

Northampton, meanwhile, will be in party mood having coasted to the title, despite their financial struggles earlier in the campaign.

Chris Wilder’s side are currently on a magnificent 23-game unbeaten run in League Two and have only lost five times all season.

Their last defeat was against Pompey at Sixfields Stadium just before Christmas, with Conor Chaplin grabbing a late winner after Gareth Evans had cancelled out Ryan Cresswell’s opener.

And you have to go all the way back to 1924 to find the last time that the Cobblers triumphed at Fratton Park in the league.

TEAM NEWS
Alex Bass (knee), Kyle Bennett (ankle), Matt Clarke (groin), Ryan Fulton (thigh), Marc McNulty (hamstring) and Adam Webster (ankle) are all doubts for Pompey.

Paul Jones could feature after making a quicker than expected recovery from a thigh problem, while Conor Wilkinson has started training with the Blues following a groin injury.

Joel Byrom (back), Paul Corry (knee), Rod McDonald (calf), Brendan Moloney (knee) and top scorer Marc Richards (Achilles) are all missing for the visitors.

But winger Ricky Holmes and striker John Marquis are both expected to feature against their former club.
