Wes: Game Plan Worked

Pompey still had the spectre of a 5-1 defeat at Scunthorpe hanging over their heads.

But they exorcised those ghosts with an impressive display at top-of-the-table Chesterfield.

They could not quite manage to breach their hosts’ defence, although a goalless draw was enough to lift them to 15th in the League Two table.

And Wes Fogden felt that the Blues’ thorough preparations helped them succeed at the Proact Stadium.

He said: “I thought we played really well and everything just seemed to go to plan for us.

“We’d worked out beforehand how we were going to play and put in a good performance. We stuck to the task well.

“I think the first goal killed us at Scunthorpe, but we stayed strong this time, kept possession well and counter-attacked with real flair.

“We worked on our shape and a lot of defensive work, but I was also able to get forward quite a bit and that’s what I want to do.”

Fogden produced arguably his best performance since arriving from Bournemouth in January.

But a fine save from Tommy Lee denied him the opportunity to open his goalscoring account for Pompey.

“I just ran off the centre-half and to be fair to Nicky Shorey, he picked me out a treat,” said Fogden. “The first touch was good, but the keeper was straight onto me.

“It was one of those split-second instances – he made the save and it wasn’t to be unfortunately.

“It’s disappointing that it didn’t go in and win the game for us, but I think a point was a good result for us.”
