WESTCARR'S GOAL JOY

19 August 2014

Striker delighted to score in Northampton victory

Craig Westcarr is thrilled to have opened his goalscoring account for Pompey.

The striker slammed home the second to secure victory over Northampton at Fratton Park – a third successive triumph for the Blues.

It added to Jed Wallace’s opener on what turned out to be a comfortable evening for the hosts.

And Westcarr was pleased that he could make a personal contribution to such a dominant display.

He said: “It’s very satisfying. It was great to get the goal, but even more importantly the three points.

“Nigel Atangana sent a fantastic ball through to leave me one-on-one and I took the finish well.

“Strikers thrive on chances like that, so I’m obviously very happy to get the goal.

“That gave us a bit of a cushion and it was a deserved 2-0 at the time because we were playing very well.

“The performance was great – just as it was on Saturday against Cambridge.

“We went through a little phase where we perhaps gave the ball away a bit too easily, but we were comfortable in the end.

“I don’t think our keeper really had a shot to save, so that tells you how well we defended.”

Pompey have collected seven points from a possible nine in League Two, but Westcarr will not be getting carried away just yet.

He said: “We’re not getting too jubilant – it’s important just to take things one game at a time.

“Now we’ll move onto the next game and look to get another three points against Oxford on Saturday.”
