Robinson nets only goal of the game at Privett Park

Pompey’s weekend double header ended with a disappointing defeat to Gosport at Privett Park.

Andreas Robinson netted the only goal for the Southern League Premier outfit, with the Blues wasteful at the other end.

Most of the players who were involved in the win at Westleigh Park the previous day were handed another 45 minutes.

Louis Thompson was absent, however, while Michael Jacobs was given his first pre-season appearance.

And it was the midfielder who went close to getting an early opener, only to slot wide from Ryan Tunnicliffe’s lay-off.

Instead Gosport broke the deadlock just a few moments later, with Robinson’s long-range drive sneaking into the bottom corner.

Pompey were not looking as neat in possession as they had been against the Hawks and the play was laboured.

A teasing delivery from Connor Ogilvie somehow evaded a vital touch from both a trialist and Marcus Harness.

That same trialist should have drawn the Blues level on 28 minutes, collecting a Ronan Curtis pass and spinning in the box before firing into the side netting from a few yards out.

They kept pushing for an equaliser and Harness had an effort blocked before Curtis angled a shot wide.

But Borough almost scored a second goal just before the break, with some confusion between Clark Robertson and the keeper seeing the skipper send the ball just past his own post.

Half Time: Gosport 1 Pompey 0

Pompey’s completely changed – and more youthful – side looked to get on the attack once the action restarted.

Vincent almost made another crucial contribution early in the second half, but his cross was nodded over by a trialist.

Jayden Reid was looking a lively presence, although his low shot did not overly trouble Pat O’Flaherty between the sticks.

The winger was not quite so close to scoring soon after, ballooning the ball high over the bar after being teed-up by Harry Jewitt-White.

There was not much to trouble teenager stopper Toby Steward at the other end, although he did well to come to the edge of his box and dispossess Paul Agbeseyi.

Meanwhile, Alfie Bridgman was next to try his luck for the Blues, but his attempt from the edge of the box was bent wide.

The visitors were showing flashes of neat passing play, but the end product was missing and O’Flaherty was enjoying a quiet afternoon in the south coast sunshine.

Gosport came close to wrapping things up on 82 minutes, but after Steward had done well to deal with a corner, Finn Walsh-Smith’s follow-up clipped the crossbar.

Pompey soon hit back with a fine low centre from Vincent that just evaded Dan Gifford and was fired over by Jewitt-White.

There was then an opportunistic effort from Bridgman that dipped over Borough’s trialist keeper, but also the bar.

And the final chance to salvage a draw came when Gifford was sent racing through on goal in the final minute.

But he was denied by a smart stop from the keeper and when the loose ball fell for Reid, he blazed high over the bar.
