Gosport 1 Pompey 3

Morrell, Jewitt-White and Ojo all find the target at Privett Park

14 July 2023

Joe Morrell in action for Pompey at Gosport Borough

Pompey struck two late goals to secure a 3-1 victory at Gosport Borough in their latest pre-season encounter.

Joe Morrell’s second goal of the week quickly cancelled out Rafa Ramos’ opener for the Southern Premier Division outfit.

It looked like the contest would finish all square, but substitutes Harry Jewitt-White and Destiny Ojo both struck at the death.

With John Mousinho splitting his squad between this game and Saturday’s trip to the Hawks, there were a lot of youngsters present.

Plenty of fans also made the ferry crossing to Privett Park, braving the unseasonably wet and windy weather that persisted throughout.

Ramos had the ball in the net for the home side early on, although the flag had already been raised for offside.

Koby Mottoh then hit a shot over the bar at the other end before a heavy touch denied Anthony Scully in the box.

The latter player thought he should have been awarded a penalty after appearing to be shoved in the back by Charlie Wassmer, but referee Anthony Cross disagreed.

And the visitors quickly fell behind, with Ramos quickest to react after Will Norris had smartly dealt with an angled drive from former Pompey youngster Bradley Tarbuck.

Pompey looked to hit back immediately and Callum Smart made a superb double save to deny Scully and Mottoh.

It was only a brief respite for Boro, however, as MORRELL bent home a fine shot from the edge of the area to level.

Half Time: Gosport 1 Pompey 1

Pompey were dealt a blow shortly after the interval when Josh Dockerill went down injured and had to be stretchered off.

Scully then tried to slip inside the near post, but the trialist keeper stuck out a boot to keep the ball out of his net.

Gosport soon had three excellent opportunities to retake the lead, starting with an effort from Tarbuck that cannoned back off the post.

Norris was then quickly off his line to deny one trialist, while a second smashed a ferocious strike against the woodwork.

Pompey brought on a host of academy players just past the hour mark, with Haji Mnoga Jewitt-White and Denver Hume also getting a run out.

One of the newcomers had an immediate chance to make an impression, as Ojo’s shot was gathered by the keeper.

But with so many changes for both sides, the action understandably wilted as the second half wore on.

A Gosport trialist did race through on goal in the closing stages, forcing Norris to race from his line to halt the danger.

But it was Pompey who ultimately claimed victory after winning a late series of corners that caused their opponents problems.

The third of them was whipped in by Harvey Laidlaw and dropped by the keeper, with JEWITT-WHITE bundling home the loose ball.

And the win was wrapped up in stoppage-time, as OJO raced through on goal and confidently slammed a shot into the net.
