Boss already planning for next season
There is still half of the current campaign remaining.
But Richie Barker is already casting one eye towards what he wants to achieve with the Blues next season.
Pompey travel to Southend on New Year’s Day as they look to pull clear of the League Two drop zone.
And Barker knows he has plenty of work to do if he wants to put his 2014/15 plans into action.
The Blues boss said: “I’ve told that players that I’ve got an idea of where I want us to be in 18 months time.
“Everybody’s playing for their future. I want to be successful here next season and to do that we’ve got to build something this year.
”Now we’ve got a tough match away from home against a Southend side who are flying high.
“They beat us 2-1 at Fratton Park with only 10 men and that speaks volumes about what they can do.
”We certainly won’t be taking them lightly because we know it will be a difficult test for us.
“We haven’t got the biggest squad and three games in a week has been hard going, so it will be tough.”
Barker also explained why he has used a lone striker in each of the last two games.
He said: “Sometimes you’ve got to stay in the game and we have to be respectful of what we’ll come up against.
”We can’t just assume that we’ll be able to turn up and beat people by playing the way we want to play.”
