Coppell: My Respect For Fans

Director of football praises Fratton faithful

Steve Coppell has revealed his admiration for the Fratton faithful.

Pompey’s new director of football has always been impressed with the way they have backed their side on the pitch.

But he has also praised supporters for their contribution in rescuing the club from potential oblivion last season.

Coppell said: “As everybody knows, this is a club with a fantastic history and tradition.

“There is also a wonderful fan base, who have been amazingly loyal over recent years when so many bad things have happened off the field.

“They’ve helped save their team and resurrect the club for the local community – that’s great to see.

“They’re not fair-weather fans – they support their club no matter what. I have nothing but respect for them for what they’ve done.”

Coppell has been brought in alongside new manager Richie Barker and is happy to assist wherever he is needed.

He said: “Richie will bring energy, enthusiasm, knowledge, drive and determination – the things a managerial job demands.

“I’m just here to help in whatever way I can. I’m obviously experienced, having been around for a few years.

“This club has a lot of growing to do so it can return to where it belongs in the football hierarchy.

“If I can be a part of that and have a positive input in any department, then I’ll be very pleased.”
