Blues lose 3-2 at St John's College

Pompey Academy were beaten 3-2 in their second friendly of the summer against Oxford at the weekend.

Jae Heon Kim (pictured) fired the Blues ahead after just 16 seconds at St John’s College, chasing down a clearance and rounding the keeper before firing home.

But goals from Muctari Conte, Josh Ruffles and Sam Long meant that the visitors took control.

Bradley Tarbuck had earlier struck the woodwork for Pompey, but they did reduce the deficit late on through Brandon Joseph-Baudi.

Academy manager Andy Awford said: “I’m not really fussed about the results at this stage of the season.

“There were a lot of under-16s involved – I think there were six of them on the pitch at the end of the game.

“But Oxford had some first-year professionals in their side, so it was a really good test for us.

“The pitch was hard and that made things difficult, but we competed and did okay.

“There were lots of positives and also a few negatives that we can work on in training.”

Pompey: Searle; Close, Whatmough, Field, Haunstrup; Tarasenko, Rwakarambwe; Cook, Kim, Haitham; Tarbuck
Subs: Raine, May, Rutherford, Nielsen, Joseph-Baudi, Chamberlain
