Pompey youngsters impress in Birmingham

Pompey in the Community’s badminton teams consolidated their position as the strongest Premier League 4 Sport teams in the country with both the boys and girls winning their respective tournaments at the recent Badminton England tournament in Birmingham.

The regional tournament was postponed due to snow in the early part of the year and had to be played after the national tournament was played in May.

The girls team consisting of: Bon Curtis, Charlotte McKnee, Georgina Smith and Georgia Trayte played a team tournament beating West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Stoke without dropping a game.

Even more impressive was that the girls also beat the boys from Aston Villa, while waiting for the boys tournament to finish!

The boys team consisting of: Cameron Butler, Joel Dock, Jack Elms, Joel Mansfield and Danny Peart played an individuals tournament beating Aston Villa and Stoke without losing a game.

Jamie Russell, the Premier League 4 Sport Head Badminton Coach said: “We felt we had a lot to prove as the reigning national champions, but the teams were amazing. To play an entire tournament and not lose a single game is incredible.”

Pompey in the Community runs badminton sessions as part of the Premier League 4 Sport programme, with sessions at Springfield School, Henry Cort, Bay House and Mayville High School for pupils attending those schools.

Hub clubs run on Sundays at Meadowside, Whiteley from 4pm-5.45pm and Wimbledon Park, Southsea from 3pm-5pm. These sessions are open to any young people aged 11 to 16 and run throughout the summer and all year round.  For further details contact Jamie Russell by email at:  jamiebadminton@icloud.com
