Play Up Pompey Music

3 July 2013

Hear some great bands and support your club

Hundreds of musicians, DJs, promoters and even comedians will be out in force this month to stake their place in the history of Portsmouth Football Club.

All they need to achieve this is you.

Play Up Pompey Music is the umbrella organisation for gigs, club nights and a comedy spectacular to raise funds for community shares in Pompey Supporter's Trust.

Starting on July 12, venues across the city will play host to a series of events where Pompey fans can have a good time, hear some amazing local and even international talent and raise funds for the club they love.

In a joint venture with Pompey’s 12th Man, raffle tickets can be purchased at events and there will be an exclusive online competition to win a host of prizes.

Details of all events and competitions – and information on how you can support your club – are available at www.playuppompey.org

To get involved in Play Up Pompey Music, all we need you to do is leave the house, join us for several nights out, put your hand in your pocket and have a good time. Highlights of the 16-day programme include:

Ska Night  at Fratton Park (July 19): The Racketeers, Offbeat Offensive, The Silhouettes, Skaraman

Festival of Fake and Funk at The Wedge (July 27): The Tiddley Kinks, The Heartbreakers as Led Zeppelin, Days of Speed as Paul Weller, Funktifino vs The Monkey Love Stunt Team

Comedy at The Wedge (July 14): The Raymond & Mr Timpkins Revue, Sean Collins, Andy Askins. Compered by Dinga

Dirty Little Rockstars 2 Stage Local Band Show Case (July 26):  Stage 1: Kassassin Street, Kill Kasper, Carmen Rosa, Paddy Taylor + It's a Sin DJs. Stage 2: The Underground Pilots, Stray Bullets Kill, The Red and The Black, Zenthetix + Wolf Cub Club DJs

Mod Night at The Cellars (July 19): The Targets, King Jester & Half Light

There are also many other events at venues such at the Little Johnny Russells, The Festing and Milton Village Hall.  We have a day at the bandstand (weather permitting) and shows at the The Fat Fox, The 5th Hants, Pie & Vinyl and many others.

Money is being collected in various ways – some gigs have entrance fees, others will have buckets or unique fundraising plans. Go to the website to find out what’s in your local.  If they aren't doing anything, why not ask them to put something on? The squad will be visiting the pub that raises the most to spend some time with the regulars and say thank you!

And the players are even getting involved at the shows too. Manager Guy Whittingham has promised team support at some events and captain Johnny Etrl’s partner Selma, along with Pompey legend Vince Hilaire, will be putting on a show at The Wellington in Old Portsmouth on July 24.

All the money raised will be converted into shares held in the name of Play Up Pompey Music. Venues who raise the most will be able to display one of the share certificates and there will be an awards evening to celebrate the achievements of those taking part, as well as draw the PUPM/Pompey’s 12th Man raffle.

A lot of work has been put in to this by the local community, now they just need you to join them. Get your tickets now at www.playuppompey.org and we'll see you there!
