Devera: We Share The Blame

12 November 2013

Defender knows Newport display was not good enough

Joe Devera had no excuses following Pompey’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy exit at Newport.

The Blues made a catalogue of defensive errors to go down 3-0 in south Wales.

Conor Washington and Deji Oshilaja took advantage early on, while the former added a third goal late in the game.

And Devera believes the entire side need to share the blame for an abject display.

The defender said: “It’s a very disappointing result for us – we didn’t play very well at all. We just didn’t really turn up.

“It wasn’t really about individuals because we were beaten up a bit as a team.

“They set their game-plan out to get an early goal and they got that, which killed us a bit. We couldn’t really get back into it after that.

“The goals we conceded were very sloppy and the back four need to take full responsibility for that.

“But the team as a whole know that the performance wasn’t good enough. It was a long journey home under the circumstances.

“We need to take a look at ourselves, find out where we went wrong and use the next few days on the training ground to work on that ahead of Saturday.”

Devera has played all across the defence this season and was used as a right-back at Rodney Parade.

He said: “It’s not ideal, but I don’t mind doing a job for the team wherever that may be. My preferred position is centre-back, but I’ve played full-back before and I’m happy to do it.”
