Keeper begins Pompey career with victory and clean sheet
Trevor Carson might have expected a tough debut in the Pompey goal.
The keeper arrived on loan from Bury during the week following the Blues’ 4-2 defeat at York.
But he was well protected by an impregnable back-line as his new side eased to a 3-0 victory over Rochdale.
It was not until the dying seconds that Carson was called into action, making a superb double stop to secure a clean sheet.
The 25-year-old said: “It was a good day – I couldn’t have asked for a better start.
“Getting the three points was the main thing, but the clean sheet topped it off perfectly.
“It was a comfortable 3-0 victory and the two centre-backs were outstanding. They won every header.
“Rochdale are a good passing side, but we got in their faces and didn’t let them play.
“There wasn’t a great result last week and all the lads were saying in the changing room that they owed the fans a performance.
“But we can’t rest on our laurels now. We’ve made a good start and now we have to kick on.
“It’s not job done. We’ve got the cup game on Tuesday and then a massive match at Plymouth next Saturday.”
Carson has been with the Blues for less than a week, but is already feeling at home on the south coast.
He said: “The lads are a great bunch and I’ve settled in quickly here. It’s a dream to play in front of a big passionate crowd.
“I’ve come here for three months, but I want to play well and try to earn a contract here.”
