Marquis: Now To Kick On

25 October 2013

Striker looking to build on his first month at Fratton

John Marquis penned a new one-month loan deal with Pompey at the start of the week.

The striker’s initial 30 days saw him score on his debut and then start every match of the Blues’ unbeaten four-game run.

He is happy enough to simply appear on the pitch after featuring just once for parent club Millwall this season before moving to Fratton Park in September.

But now Marquis is looking to move up the gears and make a positive impression.

He said: “I’ve had a few starts in a row now and am just enjoying playing regular football.

“When I came here it was to play games, score goals and do what I could to help the team.

“The new manager at Millwall brought players in and I found myself further down the pecking order.

“I’m at a point in my career where I need to be playing regularly, so I can improve my game further.

“I’ve started all of the last four games and we’re unbeaten in that time – plus I scored a couple of goals.

“So I had a good first month and was happy to stay for another. Pompey wanted me here, so it was a no-brainer really.

“They have given me an opportunity and hopefully I can use this month to step up again.

“Nothing beats playing in a competitive game and scoring goals in front of big crowds at Fratton Park.”

Marquis has enjoyed forging a strike partnership with Patrick Agyemang in the last few weeks.

He said: “Pat’s a good player who’s very effective when he gets the ball to his feet and runs at defenders.

“We’re starting to work well together and I think you can see that we’re beginning to click.”

Marquis is hoping that they continue to shine when Pompey travel to Torquay this weekend.

He said: “I’ve been there once, but I don’t know much about them. I played there in a Youth Cup game when we won and I scored – hopefully it will be the same on Saturday!”
