Goalless draw in development friendly
Pompey played out a goalless draw with Oxford in a friendly at Furze Lane.
Phil Smith, Dan Butler and Ashley Harris were joined by members of the Blues’ development and academy sides.
The visitors saw a shot fly narrowly past the post early on, while Harris had a goalbound effort blocked at the other end.
Smith then made a couple of fine saves midway through the first half, scooping a header off the line before keeping out a fierce drive.
But Pompey started to pen Oxford back into their own half, creating a number of half-chances without testing the goalkeeper.
Harris had a couple of opportunities after the restart before Jack Maloney flashed a shot across the face of goal.
It was the Blues looking more likely to score and Ben Close saw his drive narrowly clear the crossbar.
But Smith came to the hosts’ rescue on 65 minutes, diving full-length to keep out an Oxford header.
Harris then had a great chance to grab a late winner, but could only send his lob straight into the keeper’s arms.
