Pompey v Wycombe Abandoned

Pompey’s League Two clash with Wycombe was abandoned at half-time because of a waterlogged pitch.

The match was level at 1-1 with Patrick Agyemang cancelling out Billy Knott’s opener.

But there was heavy rain throughout the first half, causing large puddles to form and the sides did not resume after the break.

Guy Whittingham had made one change from the side that beat Bury at the weekend.

Trevor Carson – who was not allowed to face his parent club – replaced Phil Smith between the sticks, while Simon Ferry was fit enough for a place on the bench.

There were no chances in a sloppy start to the game that saw both sides guilty of giving away possession far too easily.

Agyemang did have the ball in the back of the net on 13 minutes, but referee Lee Collins had long since blown for a foul on Kortney Hause.

Josh Scowen then flashed a shot wide from 25 yards as the rain began to pour down and lightning lit up Fratton Park.

Billy Knott was next to try his luck – also from distance – but saw his drive diverted over the crossbar by Carson’s fingertips.

Fans started to take refuge further back in stands as the conditions became biblical, with a deluge of rain and thunder cackling all around.

But it soon relented and Jed Wallace went close to opening the scoring on 28 minutes, only to see his cheeky chip narrowly clear the crossbar.

It was Wycombe who broke the deadlock moments later, however, with Knott lashing home an unstoppable shot after a corner had found him on the edge of the box.

Pompey tried to hit back immediately, but Thery Racon’s powerful drive was palmed away by Chairboys keeper Matt Ingram.

And the rain soon returned with a vengeance as puddles started to form on the surface, preventing the ball from moving freely.

But the Blues levelled just before the break when Ricky Holmes’ free-kick was headed across the face of goal by Bradley and AGYEMANG stuck out a foot to poke the ball home.

The rain continued throughout the interval, though, and it came as no surprise when the game was called off
