McInnes delighted that England are coming to Fratton
Pompey chairman Iain McInnes has spoken of his pride at the selection of Fratton Park for the forthcoming England Women's FIFA World Cup qualifier.
On Thursday, September 26, England play Turkey in the Group Six qualifier (kick-off 7.05pm), looking to take a step towards securing their place at the 2015 finals to be held in Canada.
McInnes said: “To host any international match is a great honour for a club, but to have been selected for this prestigious fixture, given the growing popularity of the women's game, makes me really proud.
"Women's football is close to our heart at Pompey. We have a fantastic ladies team and we see them as an integral part of our community club.
"The last time Fratton Park staged a women's international match it attracted a then record attendance and it would be magnificent if we could do the same again.”
In February 2002 England beat Portugal 3-0 at the stadium in front of 8,821. The last time England faced Turkey was in the 2011 qualifying campaign when they won both matches 3-0.
England women start their qualification campaign with a game against Belarus on Saturday, September 21 at Bournemouth, before heading along the coast. Both games will be covered extensively by the BBC.
