Hills thrilled with Portsmouth's backing

More than 6,000 turned up to watch England Women in action at Fratton Park.

And the people of Portsmouth were rewarded as Brent Hills' side demolished Turkey 8-0.

Many more would have watched the game on television, enjoying seeing the goals fly in from their comfort of their sofa.

But Hills was pleased that so many supporters turned up to support England and create a party atmosphere.

The interim head coach said: “We’ve had two local games and I think the crowds have been pretty reasonable.

“The atmosphere was really good. I can remember coming here to watch some games, so I’ve heard that before. They did well to stir things up.

“It would be nice if we could come back here and get even more!”

Toni Duggan hit a first half hat-trick – which included two goals in the second minute – to help down Turkey.

Ellen White and Eniola Aluko both grabbed two each before Natasha Dowie came off the bench to complete the scoring.

Hills said: “We were 6-0 up at the break and could have easily taken our foot off the pedal.

“We didn’t score as many goals in the second half, but kept going and tried to do the right things.

“Toni did well, but it was a team performance – she can’t score a hat-trick if the team don’t provide for her.

“There’s no secret formula – it’s just hard work on the training field. They’re a talented group.

“The players tried to implement what we’ve worked on – they wanted to make amends for what happened in the Euros.”
