Portsmouth Welcomes England Women

17 September 2013

International stars visit the city

England internationals Alex Scott and Jordan Nobbs were welcomed on-board HMS Duncan at Portsmouth Naval Base ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Turkey at Fratton Park on Thursday, September 26.

The international stars were greeted by members of the Royal Navy women’s football team and crew members on the Royal Navy’s newest ship and took part in a photo-shoot and impromptu kick-about on the flight deck.

They then visited Medina Primary School, meeting up with Blues boss Guy Whittingham and players Marcos Painter and Tom Craddock, as well as Leeta Rutherford, Jaz Williams, Zoe Rundle and Imogen Wade-Palmer from Pompey Ladies.

The schoolchildren had a chance to meet all the special guests and take part in an exclusive coaching session.

Pupils received top tips in a ‘skills and drills’ session, received advice on how to get involved in football and had the chance to ask what it is like to play for England.

Alex Scott said: “It has been fantastic to come down to Portsmouth and get such an amazing reception.

“We really enjoyed going on-board HMS Duncan and meeting members of the crew and Royal Navy football team.

“It has been brilliant to come to Media Primary School as well. The kids have been great and we are honoured to receive such a turn-out from Portsmouth FC.

“It is a really important game for us and we look forward to putting on a really good show. We are hoping that football fans across the south will come down and cheer us on.”

To help mark a special year for the Football Association – the 150th anniversary and 20 years since it took over the running of the women’s game – there is a series of special priced tickets to allow football fans in the south the chance to experience top class women’s football.

Pompey season ticket holders and members of the Armed Forces can attend for £2.50 and group bookings of at least 15 people can purchase a ticket for as little as £1.50.

Prior to seeing the two teams in action, fans are invited to take part in free, fun football-based interactive games in association with Continental Tyres.

Games include batak boards, a speed cage, a target shoot inflatable plus a new trailer that houses digital stations and the FA WSL trophy, Cyprus Cup and FA WSL Continental Cup.

To add to the England party atmosphere, there will also be hair braiding and face painting, all of which will take place outside the stadium from 5pm.
