Tower To Light Up For England

18 September 2013

Spinnaker will show city's support for national team

England Internationals Alex Scott and Jordan Nobbs have visited the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

The duo were joined by members of the Pompey Ladies team at the attraction, which will light up in the red and white colours of England’s flag to celebrate Fratton Park hosting the Women’s World Cup qualifier against Turkey on Thursday, September 26 (7.05pm kick-off).

From 6.30pm on Thursday, September 19 and Wednesday, September 25, the tower will use its sophisticated lighting system to show the city’s support for the national team.

Alex Scott said: “It was amazing to come to the Spinnaker Tower and get such a spectacular view of Portsmouth.

“We are extremely honoured that it will be lit up in the England colours in the run-up to our qualifier.

“It is a really important match for us and we hope that as many people as possible will be inspired by the lights and come down to Fratton Park to cheer us on.”

Pompey Ladies chairman Dave Coyle added: “We are both honoured and delighted to be hosting this Women’s World Cup qualifier here in Portsmouth.

“I think the lighting up of the Spinnaker Tower sums up our pride at hosting and England international.

“We hope that football fans across the south will come and join us for this prestigious event.”

The Turkey qualifier is the second match to be played on the south coast in five days, as the Three Lions will open their campaign against Belarus at Bournemouth’s Goldsands Stadium on Saturday, September 21.

To help mark a special year for the Football Association – the 150th anniversary and 20 years since it took over the running of the women’s game – there is a series of special priced tickets to allow football fans in the south the chance to experience top class women’s football.

Pompey season ticket holders and members of the Armed Forces can attend for £2.50 and group bookings of at least 15 people can purchase a ticket for as little as £1.50.

Prior to seeing the two teams in action, fans are invited to take part in free, fun football-based interactive games in association with Continental Tyres.

Games include batak boards, a speed cage, a target shoot inflatable plus a new trailer that houses digital stations and the FA WSL trophy, Cyprus Cup and FA WSL Continental Cup.

To add to the England party atmosphere, there will also be hair braiding and face painting, all of which will take place outside the stadium from 5pm.
