Holmes: Let's Continue Fine Run

20 April 2014

Midfielder wants a strong finish to the season

Ricky Holmes says Pompey are finally proving what they are capable of.

Relegation from the Football League looked a real possibility a few weeks ago following a run of six games without a win.

However, Andy Awford’s arrival has caretaker manager has inspired a remarkable turnaround in form.

Saturday’s 3-2 triumph over Bristol Rovers was the Blues’ fourth in succession and all but guaranteed survival ahead of an Easter Monday trip to struggling Northampton

But Holmes – who produced a man-of-the-match display against the Pirates – does not want Pompey to relax.

He said: “There are fine lines in this league. Anyone can beat anyone and it’s consistency that will get you promoted.

“I don’t think that any side is better than us – we just haven’t performed to our full potential week in, week out.

“But now we’ve got some self-belief – that’s what Andy’s put back into us and hopefully that can continue.

“We’re proving to everyone in this league that we are able to compete and win matches.

“We look so fit and full of enthusiasm at the moment and we’re scoring goals, which is great to see.

“The fans are behind us and we’re enjoying our football, so we need to keep our confidence and continue winning games.

“We go to Northampton on Monday and they’ll be fighting for their lives, but we want to finish as high up the table as we can.”

Holmes has enjoyed being part of an attacking midfield trio that support lone forward Ryan Taylor.

He said: “You need a good striker to be able to do that and we’ve found one. Ryan’s been magnificent.

“He holds the ball up well and that gives us time to get forward and support him. It’s less rigid and it gives us the freedom to enjoy ourselves.”
