BOSS DELIGHTED WITH POSH CUPSET

Awford's joy at Peterborough victory

The League Cup has not been kind to Pompey in recent years.

But a 1-0 victory over League One Peterborough means they are through to the second round for the first time since 2010.

Miles Storey hit the only goal of the game after 12 minutes to ensure an upset.

But Andy Awford was thrilled with the performance of his entire side against Darren Ferguson’s Posh outfit.

The Blues boss said: “We’re delighted to get through because Peterborough are a quality side who came here in good spirits after beating Rochdale at the weekend.

“They played some good stuff and I expect them to do well this season.

“But I thought our lads were magnificent – the desire and effort they showed was absolutely fantastic.

“Miles is a real threat with his pace and took the goal ever so well. It was a fantastic finish that nestled in the bottom corner.

“We opened them up in the first half and I was a bit disappointed that we were only one goal up at the break.

“We made a tactical switch and went with a back three and flooded the midfield to shut them out.

“That worked and I was delighted with the performance – everyone played their heart out.”

Pompey will find out their next Capital One Cup opponents when the draw is made live on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening.

Awford said: “If we’re at home then someone from our league would be good because we’d have more of a chance of progressing.

“But if we’re away then I’d like one of the Premier League big-boys – that would be a bit of a money spinner.”
