Planning committee meeting this week
Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee meets on Wednesday to decide whether the proposed Tesco superstore adjacent to Fratton Park gets the go-ahead.
If approved, the overall deal will allow the club to start work on a longer-term project to redevelop Fratton Park and regenerate land in the vicinity of the stadium.
The committee is due to meet on August 6 to consider the plans for a 10,000 sq m superstore on land behind the Fratton End.
If the plans are accepted, the club will benefit financially, as well as acquiring land behind the North Stand and Fratton End to enable it to expand the stadium in the future.
This would put the land, vital to the club’s future, under its direct ownership for the first time.
In the medium-term, the club would also be looking to significantly improve the infrastructure outside the stadium, including a car park and landscaping project.
Pompey chief executive Mark Catlin said: “We are confident this scheme is good for the club and also good for the city as a whole, and we hope the committee will feel able to support it.”
The meeting at The Guildhall starts at 2pm. Details can be found here.
