Defender excited about start of season

We’re ready for the new campaign.

That was the message from Adam Webster following the completion of Pompey’s pre-season programme.

The teenage defender played more than an hour of the 2-1 home defeat to Charlton.

And he was pleased with the Blues’ display against their second Championship opponents of the week.

“It was a good work-out for the whole team,” said Webster. “I think we produced a decent performance against a side who are two leagues above us.

“Bournemouth kept the ball well on Tuesday night, while Charlton are a bit more direct.

“But it’s good to play these different sides because it’s getting us ready for the new season.

“We’re all feeling excited and there’s great morale in the changing room. Everyone’s looking forward to the first game.

“I’ve seen a few players come and go since I’ve been at the club, but all the lads here now get on really well.”

Webster will likely be battling it out with Alex Wynter for the right-back slot at Exeter next week.

And he is hoping to make his mark in the first team after spending the majority of the previous campaign on loan at Aldershot.

“At the time I was a bit disappointed to leave,” said Webster. “But it was useful. I played a lot of games and it helped me ‘man up’ a bit.

“Now I’m hoping this is the season where I can start a lot more games for Pompey.

“I’ve been in and around the first team for a couple of years now, but haven’t been able to cement a place yet.”
