BOSS WELCOMES LUTON TEST

27 December 2014

Awford happy with quick turnaround

Pompey do not have long to recover from their Boxing Day blues.

There was little Christmas cheer at Fratton Park as AFC Wimbledon took advantage of some generous defending to secure a 2-0 victory.

But just two days later they have some more festive football fare with a trip to Luton.

And Andy Awford has welcomed the quick turnaround as Pompey try to climb back up the League Two table.

The Blues boss said: “I think it’s a good thing because straight away we have the opportunity to make things better.

“The lads have got a chance to bounce back and it’s important that they take that.

“Inconsistency has been a problem for us all season, except for right at the start when we were doing well.

“If we get the performance that we want then we’re more than capable of getting something at Luton.

“But if we get the same performance that we had against AFC Wimbledon then we’ll get nothing.

“We’ve got to start the game better and make sure we’re still in a contest rather than giving ourselves a mountain to climb.”

Last season’s Conference Premier champions have adapted quickly to life back in the Football League.

John Still’s Luton side currently sit fourth in the table and are just two points behind leaders Shrewsbury.

Awford said: “I’ve watched them a couple of times this season. They won both of those and are a good side.

“John’s a very experienced manager, who has got them organised and performing the way he wants.

“They play to their strengths and we go there knowing that it’s going to be a very tough game.”

Pompey are 3/1 with Sky Bet to win at Luton. Bet at www.skybet.com/pompey to be in with a chance of winning the club £250,000 from the Sky Bet Transfer Fund.
