LADIES RUN RIOT AT BOSCOMBE

8 December 2014

Comfortable Hampshire Cup victory for Blues

Pompey Ladies eased into the quarter-finals of the Hampshire Cup with a 13-0 away rout of Boscombe.

Laura Newsome struck four times, while Lucy Quinn bagged a hat-trick to help set-up a home clash with Shanklin in the last eight.

The Blues broke the deadlock early on when Charley Wilson was first to the loose ball after a shot had been saved.

Quinn then doubled the advantage by converting Sarah Kempson’s cross, before Wilson teed-up Chloe Dark for the visitors’ third.

Leeta Rutherford headed home a fourth, while Molly Clark’s fine run and finish made it 5-0 at the interval.

There was no let-up in the second and Quinn dinked the ball over the Boscombe keeper to add to the scoring.

Jess Frampton’s fierce finish, a header from substitute Newsome and an Ini Umotong effort ensured the goals kept flowing.

Newsome then put the visitors into double figures with a neat volley before Quinn completed her hat-trick with a superb solo effort.

There were an extra gloss added to the result in stoppage-time when Newsome netted twice to take her personal tally to four and ensure 13 was a lucky number for Pompey.

Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “It was ultimately a comfortable victory, although it was a bit of a mis-match.

“But it was still a worthwhile exercise, as we managed to try out some patterns of play that worked well.

“I’ve always said that it’s important to share the goals around the side and not rely on one or two players, so it was great to see so many on the scoresheet.

“The Hampshire Cup is a competition that we’ve got a great history in and hopefully our success will continue this season.”

Pompey: Blakely; Bazan, Rutherford, Currie (Keen 50), Frampton; Sievwright (Newsome 46), Clark, Kempson; Dark, Wilson (Umotong 46), Quinn

Pompey have been handed away draws in two other cup competitions.

They face a trip to Gillingham in the second round of the FA Women’s Cup and will visit Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup.
