Alfei: Something To Build On

17 January 2014

Defender says Pompey have to stay solid

Pompey had been conceding goals at an alarming rate.

But three clean sheets from the last four games suggests that the leak has finally been plugged.

Daniel Alfei played a key role in the latest of those, making his debut in last week’s goalless draw at Oxford.

And the on-loan right-back believes the Blues have to build from the back if they want to climb the League Two table.

“There have been a few clean sheets recently,” says Alfei in the official matchday magazine for Saturday’s clash with Mansfield. “That’s a good base to build on. It means you’re not losing games.

“You have to build solid foundations and that’s what the manager is trying to do.

“I like to get forward, but defending is my ultimate focus and I can say for certain that we’re not lacking any ability at the back.

“We looked really solid last Saturday and now it’s important that we stay focused and make sure that continues.”

You can read the full interview with Alfei – where he also talks about settling in at Fratton Park – in Saturday’s programme.

Issue 17 is another packed edition with a double-sided pull-out poster and collectable player cards.

Also in the perfect-bound 84-page publication, Nicky Shorey discusses his firsts, we take an in-depth look at Accrington and there are exclusive columns from Richie Barker, Iain McInnes and Johnny Ertl.

Saturday’s matchday magazine is available to buy from programme sellers around Fratton Park and is great value at just £3.
