Barker: Let's Create Some Daylight

31 January 2014

Boss looking to increase gap from bottom two

It is something the Blues have not managed since last March.

But Richie Barker is aiming for back-to-back league triumphs when Torquay visit Fratton Park this weekend.

Tuesday night’s win at Wycombe moved Pompey up to 18th in the League Two table – six points clear of the drop zone.

And Barker is hoping to end a positive week on a high by claiming another three points against the Gulls.

The Blues boss said: “We go into the game on the back of a good week on our travels and the boys are feeling positive.

“Now we need to make sure we put some daylight between us and the bottom two.

“Torquay are one of the sides below us and the bigger that gap is then the easier it will become for us.

“It’s one defeat in seven now – and we were only a few seconds away from being undefeated in seven.

“But we’re not getting carried away just yet because we’ve still got a long way to go.

“We’ve got some home games coming up in the next few weeks that will probably dictate where we finish.”

Torquay are currently two points adrift of safety, but Barker does not expect an easy encounter against Chris Hargreaves’ side.

He said: “They’ve got a new manager who has changed a few things around and they’re still within touching distance of plenty of other sides.

“A few new players have come in and they didn’t play on Tuesday, so I’m sure they’ll be fresh and full of enthusiasm.”

Pompey have no new injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s match, although Danny East (ankle) and Simon Ferry (hamstring) are still sidelined.
