Striker pleased to get off the mark on his home debut

He helped lift the gloom as both literal and metaphorical rain clouds gathered around Fratton Park.

And Ryan Taylor is delighted to get his Pompey career properly up and running.

The Blues were trailing to an acrobatic over-head effort from Lee Stevenson early in the second half.

But Taylor rescued a point when he latched onto David Connolly’s incisive pass and calmly stroked the ball home.

The striker said: “The atmosphere was brilliant. The ground looked quite full and you could hear the fans throughout.

“So it was nice to score on my home debut and hopefully I can start playing consistently and get some more.

“Strikers always want to get off the mark as quickly as possible and I’m pleased I’ve done it so soon.

“It was a great ball from David, who’s a very clever player and his experience really shone through.

“We’re disappointed not to take all three points because we thought we were the better side.

“But we have to take the positives from that game, bring them into our next one and hopefully get all three points.

“We had some good spells during the game before we fell behind, but then showed good character to get the draw.”

The result means Pompey are only two points clear of the bottom two, but Taylor believes that will change.

He said: “I think the squad we’ve got is brilliant – we just need to keep our concentration in certain periods.

“But with the ability we’ve got, I’m confident that we’ll be able to start pushing up the table.”
