AWFORD: FITNESS IS KEY

Boss reveals Pompey's pre-season priority

Pompey have now scored 10 goals in just two pre-season friendlies.

They followed up last week’s 4-0 victory at Havant & Waterlooville with a 6-1 rout of Bognor.

But Andy Awford is only concerned about his troops being ready for the opening league match at Exeter on Saturday, August 9.

And an afternoon of football at a sweltering Nyewood Lane was another useful part of Pompey’s squad getting into tip-top shape.

Awford side: “It was a really good work-out for our lads against a Bognor side who like to knock the ball around.

“It gets a few more miles in their legs in humid conditions, so it was a useful exercise for us.

“There might have been a few more goals, but I’m not really fussed about the results at this moment in time.

“It’s all about fitness and trying to avoid picking up injuries as much as we possibly can.

“The attitude of the players is superb – you can see that they’re getting fitter and stronger.

“We continue to work them hard, but they do everything that we ask of them.”

Pompey were without the injured trip of goalkeeper Michael Poke and defenders Jack Whatmough and Danny East against the Rocks.

Awford said: “There were a few bumps and bruises before the game, but everyone seems to have come through it okay.

“Michael rolled his ankle slightly in training, so we didn’t want to take any risks there, while Jack had a dead leg and Danny’s got a small groin problem. There was no point putting any of them out there.”
