BOSS READY FOR FRIENDLY OPENER

11 July 2014

Awford will use most of his squad against Hawks

With the World Cup almost over, fans might be starting to wonder where they will get their football fix from.

Well fear not – the Blues are back in action for their first pre-season friendly this Saturday.

Andy Awford’s side will make the short journey to Westleigh Park to face Havant & Waterlooville (3pm kick-off).

The fixture provides Pompey players with a chance to build on their fitness ahead of next month’s League Two opener at Exeter.

And Awford also knows that people will be keen to see his summer signings.

The Blues boss said: “It’ll be nice for the fans to see the new players in action for the first time.

“A lot of the squad will be involved, although there are a few with knocks and niggles who might not feature.

“Some might get 45 minutes, others might just get 30 and do some running after the game. For us it’s an extension of training, really.

“But we also want to provide Havant & Waterlooville with a good game and for them to get some revenue.

“The pitch will be magnificent – it always is over there at this time of the year.

“It’ll be good to see old friends again and we’re all looking forward to the occasion immensely.”

The traditional trip to face the Hawks always draws a big crowd – and this year will be no different.

Awford said: “There will be a lot of Pompey fans there and some players might be a bit shocked to see so many supporters.

“But it’s good for our players to go out and play in front of a decent crowd ahead of the new season.”
