AWAY START PLEASES BOSS

Awford happy with 2014/15 fixture list

The fixture computer spluttered into life and spat out 46 league fixtures for Pompey to play this season.

Exeter away on the opening day, AFC Wimbledon at home on Boxing Day, a trip to Luton two days later…

The countdown has now started to Saturday, August 9 and the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

And Andy Awford is happy with the hand that Pompey have been dealt.

The Blues boss said: “You immediately look at the first and last fixtures and who we play over the Christmas and Easter periods.

“I’m pleased with how it’s panned out because I wanted to start with an away fixture and be at home on Boxing Day.

“I also think it’s nice to be at home on the final day because it gives you a chance to thank the supporters.

“After that first game we also have back-to-back home league matches which is nice.

“Who you play doesn’t really matter because you’ve got to face them all at some point anyway.”

The World Cup and test match cricket are still on the minds of most sporting fans.

But the Blues squad will be returning for pre-season training next Thursday to begin their preparations for an assault on League Two.

Awford said: “It gets everyone excited about the new season when the fixtures are released – not just the fans.

“The players return for pre-season training next week and it gives them something to focus on.

“The next task will be to see what friendlies Exeter are playing and have them watched.”
