Drennan's Goal Hunt

7 March 2014

Striker hopes next effort will count for more

Young strikers dream about their first goal in senior football.

But it was a bitter-sweet experience for Michael Drennan, who opened his account in a 5-1 defeat at Scunthorpe a fortnight ago.

Pompey have recovered from that humbling, however, and taken four points from their last two matches.

And Drennan – on loan from Aston Villa – wants to help them continue that run – starting with victory over Cheltenham on Saturday.

He said: “I couldn’t take much out of scoring, but hopefully there will be many more to come and I can make a contribution to the team.

“It was my first game and it was just one of those days when nothing went right.

“But we bounced back to win the next game and then there was a good draw on Monday night as well.

“The team are playing really well at the moment and hopefully that will continue as we look to climb the table.”

Drennan started the home victory over Accrington, but missed the draw at Chesterfield as he was on international duty with the Republic of Ireland under-21s.

He said: “It was a good experience for me to be in the squad and it’s just a shame I had to miss a Pompey match.

“But that’s just the way it worked out and it’s up to the gaffer whether I’m back in the side to face Cheltenham.

“I can’t really complain if I’m not because the team played so well the other night.”

Michael Drennan is 7/1 with Sky Bet to score the first goal on Saturday. Open an account at www.skybet.com/pompey for great offers and to earn money for the club.
