SHOREY'S CUP HOPE

8 November 2014

Defender looking to progress with Pompey

He has played Premier League football and won two caps for England.

But success in the FA Cup is something that has eluded Nicky Shorey during his illustrious career.

The 33-year-old will hope to be involved when Pompey get their campaign underway against Aldershot on Sunday.

And Shorey knows that victory at Fratton Park could start an exciting run in the competition.

He said: “I’ve always enjoyed the tradition of the FA Cup and it’s definitely the best domestic cup there is.

“The fans love it as well and hopefully there will be a big crowd there to cheer us on this weekend.

“I haven’t been too lucky in the FA Cup, but hopefully it will be different this time and we can enjoy a bit of a run.

“I think the furthest I’ve got in my career is the fifth round, which is a little bit disappointing.

“There’s a different atmosphere in the games for some reason and it’s always an amazing occasion.”

Pompey’s opponents ply their trade in the Conference Premier, but Shorey is not taking them lightly.

He said: “It’s going to be tough – Aldershot will be coming to Fratton Park and looking to cause an upset. The tie’s a bit of a derby as well.

“They’re only one league below us and we’re expecting a very difficult game. There are some very good sides at that level.

“But we’re confident after our performance last week and we’re always looking to win when we play at home.”

Tickets are still available for Pompey’s FA Cup clash with Aldershot and can be bought online here.
