WHEN THE GUNS FALL SILENT

6 November 2014

Touching tale on sale before Aldershot game

To mark the 100 year anniversary of the First World War commencing, Pompey in the Community are offering Jim Riordan’s ‘Pompified’ book, ‘When The Guns Fall Silent’ to fans for a donation of £3.

The front cover of the book features Ricky Holmes and Joe Devera dressed in authentic WW1 uniforms, standing on the top of a mocked-up trench.

The book will be available from the Pompey Study Centre in Anson Road and the Pompey Bus in the main club car park, prior to Sunday’s FA Cup match against Aldershot.

The book tells the story of two friends who play for Pompey, but are then sent off to fight on the frontline in France and witness the horrors of war.

The only respite is when the guns fall silent and the fighting gives way to an impromptu game of football between the Allies and the Germans in No-Man’s-Land.

The story, which is based on true facts from the First World War, transports readers back to the trenches of France and shows that even in times of conflict and extreme sadness, there is always hope.

All the donations from the sale of the book will go back to Pompey in the Community, so that the charity can continue to educate children in the city about this monumental moment in history.

We will remember them.
