DEVERA: CLEAN SHEETS ARE KEY

27 September 2014

Defender pleased with solid showing at Hartlepool

There was disappointment that the visitors were unable to take any of their chances in a goalless stalemate.

And the defender was at it again in the north-east, helping the Blues collect a point at Hartlepool.

Joe Devera has been a solid presence in Pompey’s back-line this season.

Patrick Agyemang and Craig Westcarr missed the best opportunities as Pompey dominated for long periods.

But Devera believes that their dogged rear-guard display bodes well for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “I thought we looked really comfortable in the first half and we had a couple of clear-cut chances that we should have scored.

“Hartlepool came at us a bit in the last 10 minutes, although up until then we looked in control for most of the game.

“It would have been good to take all three points, but it’s important to take something back with you when you’re away from home. “Now we just need to start putting goals in at the other end and then we can really take off."

“If we carry on getting clean sheets throughout the season then it’s going to make a massive difference and show in the table.

“We’ve kept a few of them now with that 3-5-2 formation and I thought we looked really solid as a unit.

“We can still take a positive feeling from the match – especially as we were able to keep a clean sheet.
