ACADEMY EASE TO YEOVIL WIN

6 December 2015

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Woodward and Haitham on target

Pompey Academy returned to league form with a convincing 3-0 victory at Yeovil.

Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain (above) opened the scoring before the break, driving forward from midfield and unleashing a 25-yard strike that flew into the net.

But despite their dominance, they had to wait until the second half to increase their advantage.

Substitute Dan Smith showed great skill to release Brandon Joseph-Buadi, who cut the ball back for Sam Woodward to slot home.

Kaleem Haitham then wrapped up the scoring late on when he burst up the pitch and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Academy coach Mikey Harris said: “The strong winds always made you think it wouldn’t be a particularly good spectacle.

“But to be fair to the lads, they dealt with the conditions pretty well and passed the ball around nicely.

“We deservedly got in front, although when Christian hit it into the wind I thought it was a bit ambitious and was surprised to see it fly into the top corner.

“We dominated possession, used our shape to good effect and looked fairly comfortable at the break.

“The wind had been against us in the first half, so I always felt that we would be able to kick on and get more goals.

“That’s exactly what happened and after Sam scored our second, we were dominant and continuing to press hard.

“We created a lot more chances, with Adam May hitting the crossbar, a few shots cleared off the line and their keeper making some good saves.

“Kaleem got the third with another fine finish at the end and overall I was very happy with our performance.

“I was delighted with the clean sheet and the quality of goals that we scored, although if I’m being hyper-critical then we should have got a few more.

“Results aren’t the biggest issue for us at this level, but the boys are delighted to go into the big FA Youth Cup game on the back of a win.

“That will do wonders for our confidence and with no game next Saturday, we can fully focus on the Manchester City test.”
