Club link-up with dementia care specialist
Portsmouth Football Club are delighted to welcome Petersfield-based Milkwood Care Ltd as one of their key academy sponsors.
The club’s young talent is now being supported by the dementia care specialist, who see the links with a sporting institution like Pompey as being very much in line with their core principles.
Company director and lifelong Blues fan Robin Cheesman said: “I suppose many would find it strange to see a group of care homes for the elderly supporting a football club.
“Although many of the residents in the care homes do have dementia and find it hard to remember recent events, they can clearly recall memories of sport from their past.
“It’s not unusual to see sporting memorabilia in people’s rooms and there is a sports bar in the local home at Liss, complete with pictures of icons like boxer Muhammad Ali, cricketer Colin Cowdrey and footballer George Best.
“The directors have encouraged all the managers of the homes to forge links with sports clubs in their areas, be it rugby, tennis, bowls or football.
“When the opportunity arose to support the up-and-coming players in the club’s youth academy, I and my fellow director and Pompey fan Janet Lloyd-Leech, leapt at the chance.”
Pompey’s academy manager Mark Kelly added: “We are delighted Milkwood Care has been able to support the academy.
“Football is a sport which spans the generations and their backing will help us hopefully bring through the next generation of players to create a whole new set of magical memories for fans.”
