POMPEY TO VISIT IPSWICH IN FA CUP

7 December 2015

Championship opposition in round three

Pompey have been drawn away to Championship side Ipswich in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The tie will be played at Portman Road on the weekend of January 8-11.

It is a repeat of the third round of the 2007/08 competition, when David Nugent set the Blues on the way to lifting the trophy at Wembley.

The only other meeting between the sides in the FA Cup took place at the same stage two years earlier.

That game also finished 1-0 in Pompey’s favour, with Dario Silva scoring the only goal of the tie.

The Blues have won 11 of their 41 clashes with the Suffolk outfit, while Ipswich have come out on top on 19 occasions.

Pompey were beaten 1-0 on their most recent visit to Portman Road for a Championship encounter in October 2011.

The Tractor Boys – who beat Arsenal to lift the trophy for the only time in 1978 – took Southampton to a replay before exiting in the third round last term.

Paul Cook’s side, meanwhile, have already seen off Macclesfield and Accrington at Fratton Park to reach this stage of the competition.
