TUBBS: TEAM MORE IMPORTANT

20 February 2015

Striker says points are more important than his goal total

Matt Tubbs has only been able to add one goal to his impressive tally since joining Pompey last month.

The striker grabbed the winner in a 1-0 home victory over Hartlepool a fortnight ago.

But he is happy to take a back seat if it means that the Blues continue to climb the League Two table.

A four-match unbeaten run – which has included four successive clean sheets – means that Pompey are in form ahead of this weekend’s trip to Cambridge

Tubbs said: “It’s been great – particularly from a defensive point of view. To go four games without conceding a goal is fantastic for the team.

“That breeds confidence throughout the squad and Jed getting a late winner after missing a penalty last Saturday obviously helps.

“If we’d missed from the spot a few weeks ago then we probably would have gone on to lose that game.

“Hopefully the tide has turned for us now and we can build on that ahead of this Saturday’s match.

“On a personal note, it’s frustrating that I’ve not got the amount of goals I would have liked.

“But we’ve collected some good results in recent weeks and that’s the most important thing.

“The games are coming thick and fast, but we’re just taking each one as it comes and looking forward to a difficult clash with Cambridge.

“I’ve been there a few times and it’s always a tough place to go, but if we can play like we have in recent weeks then we’ll be fine.”

Tubbs is enjoying the chance to form a partnership with fellow target-man Ryan Taylor.

He said: “Ryan does what he does and he’s great at it. He’s a target man who’s good with his feet and his movement is fantastic.

“But we have other strikers who can do a job for the team and competition is fierce at the moment.”

Matt Tubbs is 5/1 with Sky Bet to open the scoring at Cambridge. Bet at www.skybet.com/pompey to improve our chances of claiming £250,000 from the Sky Bet Transfer Fund.
