Loan signing keen to strike up Tubbs partnership
Pompey’s striking options have been boosted in the last seven days.
First there was the arrival of prolific striker Matt Tubbs, who netted 15 goals in the first half of the 2014/15 campaign.
And now Andy Awford has moved into the loan market to bring in Paul McCallum from West Ham for the remainder of the season.
The pair could both make their Fratton debuts against high-flying Burton this weekend.
And McCallum is excited about the opportunity of linking up with his fellow new arrival on the south coast.
The 21-year-old said: “I had a few offers from other League Two clubs, but none of them could match the stature of Pompey.
“It was a very easy decision for me to make to come here and I’m looking forward to making my debut.
“I like to get hold of the ball and bring others into play. The club have just signed Matt Tubbs and I think I can work well with him.
“I was on loan at Wimbledon a while ago and always keep an eye out for their results, so I’ve seen that he did very well there in the first half of the season.
“I know that I can score goals at this level because I’ve done it in the past – hopefully I can get started on Saturday.”
McCallum is hoping for a regular run of games during his time with Pompey, having recently recovered from an injury.
He said: “I had a stress fracture in my back at the beginning of the season, but my rehab went well and I feel fit and ready to go.
“It was frustrating to have to sit out for six months, but I’ve played a couple of games since then and felt fine.
“This is an important stage of my career and so I need to get out and play some games.”
Pompey are 6/4 favourites with Sky Bet to claim all three points against Burton.
