Defender confident that new-look side will gel
Christian Burgess knows Pompey were not at the best at Bognor.
But the summer signing from Peterborough insists that the Blues will improve before the league opener against Dagenham on August 8.
They were held to a 1-1 draw at Nyewood Lane, with Alfie Rutherford cancelling out Matt Tubbs’ early opener.
And Burgess has called for some pre-season patience as a new-look Pompey side continue to gel.
The defender said: “There are a lot of new guys in the squad and we’re working out how everyone plays and what the gaffer wants from us.
“Bognor are a decent side and have some good players, although we felt we could have penetrated them a bit more.
“We didn’t create enough and we gave a sloppy goal away, so that was particularly disappointing.
“It’s going to take a bit of time to get things right, but there are still some positives for us to take.
“A lot of the boys got minutes under their belts and we’re also getting more used to each other with every game.
“We’re building partnerships and building relationships and that should stand us in good stead for the year ahead.
“I also got through almost 90 minutes and it’s nice to get plenty of time out on the pitch in pre-season.
“It’s sometimes good to have a few problems at this stage because it gives you time to work through them before the opening league game.
“We’ve got some really good players here, so I’m confident it will all come together."
