Midfielder the latest addition to Paul Cook's squad
Pompey have signed midfielder Adam Barton on a two-year deal.
The 24-year-old was available after leaving Coventry at the end of last season.
Barton made 30 appearances for the League One side during the 2014/15 campaign.
And new boss Paul Cook was able to persuade him to make Fratton Park his next port of call.
Barton said: “This is a massive club and the manager was also a big factor in why I wanted to come here.
“He’s won this league before and the way I like to play is the same way that he likes to play, so that’s another positive.
“I like to get the ball down and play it forward – I’m always disappointed if I give it away.
“The fans were another big reason why I wanted to join the club. Coming to a place like this gives you such a boost.”
Barton has no doubts about what Pompey should be looking to achieve during the 2015/16 campaign.
He said: “Promotion has to be the aim and we’ll class the season as a failure if we don’t achieve that.”
Barton started his career at Preston before moving to Coventry in the summer of 2012, where he played a total of 73 games in three years.
He has made one senior appearance for Northern Ireland and also featured for the Republic of Ireland under-21 side.
