BURGESS: WE NEED TO BUILD ON YORK WIN

27 November 2015

Defender fully focused on Wycombe test

Pompey romped to their biggest victory of the season against York on Tuesday night.

But Christian Burgess believes that they cannot afford to get carried away ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wycombe.

A 6-0 triumph moved the Blues up a place to fourth spot and closed the gap on League Two leaders Plymouth.

And Burgess knows they will have to remain focused if they want to add the Chairboys to their list of away scalps this season.

The defender said: “It was a satisfying scoreline against York that had been coming for a while and it’s nice to get a few in front of the home fans.

“But we’re not getting carried away – as soon as the game was over we were concentrating on Saturday.

“Now we want to take confidence from that win, build on the result and try to get a winning run going.

“We need to carry on playing how we did against Carlisle and York and hopefully collect another three points.

“Wycombe are a strong side and I’m sure they’ll look to get at us in front of their own fans, but we’ll look to do the same.”

Burgess has been a mainstay in Pompey’s defence this term and built up a strong rapport with fellow centre-back Adam Webster.

He said: “We’ve got some good relationships at the back and have kept a few clean sheets, so we want to keep that going.

“Webbo’s a really top player who we all rate and the gaffer speaks very highly of him as well.

“I said a few weeks ago that he had a great game at Newport and he’s built on that and been consistent.

“But Matt Clarke’s still working really hard in training and we know that he can also do a decent job for the team.”
