EVANS: A LONG WAY TO GO

29 September 2015

Winger not getting carried away ahead of Exeter test

Gareth Evans insists that Pompey are not counting their League Two chickens.

The winger scored the opening goal as the Blues climbed to the top of the table with a 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

It also meant that they are unbeaten in all nine of their league fixtures ahead of Exeter’s visit to Fratton Park tonight.

But Evans knows that there is still plenty of work to be done if Pompey are to achieve their ambitions.

He said: “It’s hard to not look at the table – everyone knows we’re currently sitting at the top of it.

“But we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves and we’re just concentrating on putting a run of wins together.

“This is a difficult league to get out of, although a lot of guys in our squad have got experience of doing that.

“We all know how tough it can be, but we’ve got some momentum and are looking to extend this unbeaten start.

“It’s easy for people to look at us with two home games this week and think we’ll comfortably be able to stay on top.

“There’s always going to be a bit of pressure with a side like Pompey in League Two, but that’s something we’re all used to.”

Pompey will look to continue their impressive form against an Exeter side who have won just once on their league travels this term.

Evans said: “I’ve always found that it’s tough to play against them because they’re a well organised side.

“I’m not expecting an easy game and teams always like to come to Fratton Park and treat it like a cup final.”
