ROBERTS: FRATTON WILL BE ROCKING

5 August 2016

Midfielder interviewed in Carlisle programme

Friendlies offer fans a football fix, but they are no substitute for the real thing.

And the hard work over the past few weeks has all been leading up to the start of the 2016/17 campaign on Saturday.

Pompey open the season at home to Carlisle, with the games then coming thick and fast.

And Gary Roberts is delighted that it is almost time to run out at a packed Fratton for some competitive action.

“We’re all happy that it’s finally time for the nitty-gritty of league football,” he says in the official matchday magazine for Saturday’s clash with Carlisle. “We’re looking forward to the first fixture.

“I think that Fratton Park is going to be absolutely rocking. To have sold 12,000 season tickets is ridiculous, it really.

“It’s borderline crazy for this level and it’s a privilege to play in front of these supporters.

“You don’t sleep before that first game – it’s just like being a kid at Christmas. If you don’t get those butterflies in the build-up then you’re in the wrong job.”

To read the full interview – where Roberts also discusses Pompey’s summer signings, promotion hopes and taking penalties – pick up a copy of the magazine from programme sellers around the ground.

Also in issue one of the new-look publication, Conor Chaplin takes the 20 questions challenge, while we test Jack Whatmough’s general knowledge.

There is an in-depth look at Carlisle, plus exclusive columns from Iain McInnes, Paul Cook and Michael Doyle.

All this and much, much more in a packed 84 pages is available for just £3.
