MATCH PREVIEW: NEWPORT v POMPEY

24 December 2016

All you need to know about League Two clash

The presents will all have been opened by the time Pompey take to the field at Newport on Boxing Day.

But away supporters will be hoping to unwrap three more points on the road and receive plenty of festive cheer.

Their opponents are rooted to the bottom of the League Two table and are currently four points adrift of safety.

Warren Feeney was sacked as manager at the end of September after leading County to just one victory in their opening 11 games in all competitions.

His replacement was the former Stevenage, Preston and Peterborough boss Graham Westley and a run of three successive league wins suggested that the tide was turning.

But they have not tasted success again in more than a month and missed out on a dream FA Cup trip to Liverpool following an extra-time defeat to Plymouth earlier in the week.

Pompey have lost all of their Fratton meetings with Newport since suffering relegation to the fourth tier in 2013.

But there has been more joy in south Wales, with Matt Tubbs netting the only goal of the game in last season’s encounter.

TEAM NEWS
Curtis Main (abdominal) is still out for Pompey, who otherwise have a full strength squad to choose from.

Lenell John-Lewis, Joss Labadie and Jamie Turley (all knee) are sidelined for Newport, but Sean Rigg is available after serving a three-game ban.
