EVANS: LET'S LEARN FROM OXFORD LOSS

23 January 2016

Winger staying positive after home defeat

It was not up there with the Blues’ better performances of the season.

A 1-0 home defeat to Oxford has opened up a seven-point gap between Pompey and the automatic promotion places in League Two.

Jordan Bowery came off the bench to score the only goal of the game on his debut late on at Fratton Park.

Gareth Evans admitted that the hosts – who had been so impressive in their cup triumph over Ipswich earlier in the week – were below-par.

But he is confident that they can bounce back from the disappointment and return to winning ways.

The winger said: “Oxford had a game-plan to be compact and get in our faces – and they carried it out very well.

“Good luck to them for the rest of the season, but we just have to concentrate on ourselves now.

“We weren’t firing on all cylinders and didn’t look as effective as we have in the past few weeks.

“But we need to take this experience into the games against Plymouth and Northampton, which will be similar and learn from it.

“I suppose you just have to treat it as one of those days and make sure that you’re firing again for the next one.

“You shouldn’t get too high when you win and you shouldn’t get too low when you lose – that’s the way I’ve always gone about things.

“We have to go into every game looking to win and there are still plenty of them remaining this season.”
