DAVIES: FITNESS WILL COME

23 July 2016

Defender happy to be back

He had missed the previous four friendlies after suffering with a back spasm.

So Tom Davies was relieved to come on as a late substitute against Bournemouth at Fratton Park.

The centre-back – a summer signing from Accrington – unsurprisingly felt rusty following the 3-3 draw.

But he is more worried about reaching full fitness for the League Two opener against Carlisle on August 6.

Davies said: “I’m just coming back, so I’m a bit behind some of the other lads at the moment.

“You don’t want injuries when you’re coming to a new club, so I was absolutely gutted when I had to pull out of training.

“It was nice to get out on the pitch – although I was a bit short of breath afterwards. But the fitness will come with more games.

“It was certainly hot down at pitch level, but that’s pre-season and you have to deal with it.

“Now I want to make sure I’m in tip-top condition for the first game in a fortnight.

“We’ll be working on shape a bit more in the build-up to that and hopefully we can get off to a good start by beating Carlisle.”

Once the friendlies are out of the way, Davies is focused on giving the Fratton faithful something to celebrate.

He said: “You can see the calibre of player that we’ve got here and there was a big crowd that turned out for a friendly.

“We want to get the club back to where it belongs and hopefully that will start with promotion this season.”
